Where oh Where…

I'm getting married in a week and a half.  We just got back from San Jose, and haven't stopped doing wedding stuff throughout.  Meanwhile, we got some incredible news about PUNKS, that requires me to pause all of my other work and crank out some scripts.  Should be announcing that shortly.  I'm also hammering away on this creator owned manga I'm doing with Seven Seas. In other words, I'm really busy.

Sorry for the disappearing act.

PUNKS: THE COMIC – Summer Special #1

Punks: The Comic – Summer Special #1 finally lands after several months of anticipation, an early recommendation by Warren Ellis, and much praise lavished on Kody Chamberlain’s unique collage art. It tells a loosely constructed story of four roommates – Fist, Skull, Abe, and Dog – who thwart an alien invasion in between fighting amongst themselves. Chamberlain depicts the entire story in collage, with a stark visual style influenced by punk rock fliers and album covers. Joshua Fialkov’s story crackles with sight gags and absurdist humor.

Punks the Comic Christacular Special Digital Webbing: Dan: The Punks Summer Special was a mind-blowing bit of comics joy, so I can only imagine what the Christmas special is going to be like. According to the solicits, the four weird-headed bastards are searching for the true meaning of Christmas, leprosy, and friendship, so its gotta be good. There are some awesome looking Punks shirts with the Summer Special cover on ‘em for sale too, but they aren’t big enough for me, so I have to pass. page 284

Updates…

Hey Gang,This week sees the release of Cyblade: Pilot Season #1.  The book has art by Rick Mays, and is a complete reinvention of the character.  It's also a part of a competition to get me a job writing an ongoing.  I'm competing against some really great talent, so please do your part to help me trounce them.  It'll be available at finer comic retailers tomorrow.  More information on that here: http://www.topcow.com

Also, I'll be appearing with my Punks co-hort Kody tomorrow on Fanboy Radio to discuss Punks and whatever else we have coming down the pipe, so please, take the hour to listen to it live (and maybe even call in, if you can... I'm not sure) here at: http://www.fanboyradio.com .  Also, you can grab onto a podcast version of the interview shortly thereafter.  Coincidentally, the Punks store with T-Shirts, the limited edition version of the Summer Special, etc. should be live in the next day or two.  That's here: http://www.punksthecomic.com

And finally, don't forget about a week from Saturday when I'll be hosting The Future of Graphic Literature at the Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library in Downtown, Los Angeles.  The panel will feature Mark Waid, Kazu Kibuishi, Ross Richie, Christos Gage, Tony Fleecs, and myself.  There'll be a small meet and greet right afterwards.  It's being held on Saturday September 29th at 2pm, more information here: http://events.lapl.org/viewEvent.cfm?eventID=9694 .  If you haven't  been to the Central Library, you're missing one of the Los Angeles' premiere pieces of architecture, and the revitilization of downtown has made the city come alive again, which, in other words, means you don't have to worry about getting mugged anymore.

Thanks for reading, and hope y'all check out my wares,

j.

Louis and Frank

I've got a much bigger soft spot for Louis Armstrong than I do for Frank Sinatra. My Sinatra love comes from his acting (From Here To Eternity's one of my favorite films of all time, and he's just breath taking in it) than from his singing career. I think for the most part, he spent more of his career over the hill than on top of it, so to speak. But Louis Armstrong... the guy was just amazing from birth to death. There's a bunch of early recordings from his first trip to Paris, playing in clubs, and you realize that the guy just plain knew where music was going, and how to ride that wave. Equal parts soulful and technical, Louis represented all of the potential of Jazz and Blues music, much of which, I've always felt has gone untapped since. He managed to be very much his own man, not letting his race, his bizarre voice, or his odd look stop him from taking his place as one of, if not the, greats in the history of music. That indominable spirit is so clear in every note he plays and every word he sings... So much so that you can actually see that rarest of things on the face of Frank Sinatra in the below clip... respect.
