Holy. Shit. It's like Elvis Costello fucked Freddie Mercury, and let their progeny hang out with Ben Folds. Really drawing heavily on the first five or so Queen albums, but with a sense of pop hooks that Elvis Costello showcased throuhgout most of the 70's and early 80's, with the sort of post-modern tweeking the Flaming Lips are best known for, Flight of the Knife isn't just the best album I've heard this year, it may be the best album of the decade thus far.
A true masterwork from a band who are only two albums old. And, it's dirt ass cheap on iTunes right now. Go. Get it. Love it.

Right here you can read my beloved's wife contribution to a blog devoted to the history of Bunker Hill. In case you aren't aware, Bunker Hill was the huge neighborhood of victorian mansions in Downtown Los Angeles that got bulldozed to make way for sky rises. It's the setting of many a film noir, so, if you dig that stuff, you'll like the site. Enjoy.

Hey gang,
As the year draws to a close, I’ve got a couple of books squeaking in before the roles are closed on the old year, and a few quick updates.
First, this week sees my very first (of what will hopefully be many) Marvel work in the form of an Outlaw Kid story in Marvel Comics Presents #4. The art is by the amazing Chris Moeller and looks LIKE THIS:

It’s been super-sized up to 56 pages (at no additional cost to you!) and contains a ton of bonus material, including an interview with the ever-charming kitsch king Charles Phoenix, a few words from Captain Marvel/The Circle/Ms. Marvel writer Brian Reed, a review of a Bob Mould ‘event’ by blogging sensation Ian Brill, plus not one but TWO bonus comics, including the all but impossible to get Free Comic Book Day short, and one that has cool stuff like THIS in it...

Wolfgang's Vault's got The Who doing Quadrophenia LIVE
The Who - Concert Vault - Where Live Music Lives,Streaming Free Music, Live Concert Downloads Wolfgang's Vault, which offers free streams of a crap load of King Biscuit Flower Hour recordings and various slightly more authorized 'bootlegs' of concert than you'd find at your local indie record shop, just put a famous (and presumed lost) recording of the Who on their Quadrophenia tour.
There's a rather lengthy explanation on the site as to why it's so legendary, but, for any Who-philes (interesting isn't it, that I'm both an obsessive fan of Doctor Who and The Who...) it's like listening to crack cocaine with louder guitars.
The tour was their first to use a copious amount of 'special effects' (a.k.a. tape loops), and it took nearly the entire tour for them to get used to them. This is the 2nd to last concert, so they're tighter than hell. I think that this tour probably contributed pretty strongly to them tightening their sound for their mid 70's stuff like Who By Numbers and Who Are You, which really are their two last great albums as far as I'm concerned.
On a side note, I recently found The Endless Wire, which came out last year or the year before, and popped it back in. While the new stuff is positively wretched (save for Mike Post Theme, which gets kudos for mentioning one of the best TV theme writers of all time and rightfully giving his music a place in the emotional history of our culture...) the DVD and CD of them live is actually pretty rocking. Although, Pete and Roger both look like a hundred and five years old, and the shorts that Daltrey wears are pretty embarrassing. See picture below.

News and Things
Ah... November slips away, Just wrapped up the last work for hire for the year (it's for Marvel, and I'm really looking forward to everybody seeing it), and put the finishing touches on a few other projects includind the Manga for Seven Seas Entertainment, the Wildstorm comic, and the 4th Volume of Princess Resurrection. My plan is to spend December doing 'personal development' on a couple of creator owned projects I'd like to get going for early next year. I'm finally getting the hang of having a balance of work that pays the bills and makes me happy. Speaking of which... the Punks Christacular is on it's way to stores, with an estimated ship date of the 2nd week of December. I just sent out preview PDF's to critics and friends and if you'd like one, just drop me an e-mail.
In other things I done did... I redid Christina's Ann Dvorak site (http://www.anndvorak.com) with Wordpress and some Gallery plugins. I think it turned out pretty good, and is worth checking out. I'd bet there'll be some wedding pictures added on there relatively soon... which I'll link to.
Married life is everything it's cracked up to be, especially when married to the coolest chick in town.
There's a few other projects (including the aforementioned Marvel, Seven Seas, and Wildstorm books) that'll be announced soon, one of which is a collaboration with screenwriting superstar Mark Wheaton for one of my favorite publishers. Next years going to be very kickass.
Oh, also on Punks... once the pesky WGA strike is over, there's going to be some super cool news... something that Kody and I have been chomping at the bit to get going on... but the strike came in before the contracts could close, and while the strike doesn't strictly get in the way of the project... we decided we'd rather be supportive of the strikers (at least two of which are my best friends) than start work.

Douglas Adams was a genius. Truly a man before his time. Case in point, Hyperland. A documentary discussing the idea of Hypertext (y'know, that whole internet thing) from 1990, that more or less explains exactly how the internet ended up evolving in a startalingly accurate vision. The idea of literary hypertext is certainly a part of the zeitgeist, especially amongst us comic folks, with our production blogs, soundtrack listings, podcasts, commentaries, and so on. It's pretty damn cool to see nearly twenty years ago is good ol' Mr. Adams explaining it all in simple, understandable, and suprisingly not dated language. It's cut up into four parts, but here's the first to get you started.

I remember hearing about this when I was a teenager. My two alt-type friends Dave and Neil and I were all about all of the crap this represents. Mostly Sub-Genius and Leary and the sheer absuirdism. Although, it was oftentimes only a theoretical interest, as we'd get a chance to actually experience the stuff and were always left feeling remarkably uncool. Like the first time I saw John Zorn play, and I was 13 and didn't get it.
In retrospect, I owe a lot of my personality and interests to that culture. I wonder what happened to those two guys, too.
Things I Bought in a Sleepless Stupor

Full size, rollable keyboard. I end up dragging my giant ass keyboard with me wherever I go if I'm away for more than a few days. This, in theory, will help with that (although for longer trips, I'll probably still take my trusty ergonomic). It's dirt ass cheap, tho, so I suppose it's worth a try.
