The Cleaners and Boston, Ho!

THE LIST: LOS ANGELES PUBLIC LIBRARY EVENT THIS WEEKEND!

Hey gang, A quick reminder this week about the "Making Comics" event at the Will and Ariel Durant Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library this Saturday.

The Durant Branch is located a mere hop skip and a jump from Meltdown Comics and Golden Apple Comics in Hollywood, at 7140 W. Sunset Blvd.

The program is geared for 'teens on up' and will be a light and fun 'How to' for making comics, breaking into the industry, and things of that nature. It's going to be a Q & A, so having someone there to Q for my A would be greatly appreciated.

And, best of all, from 2 to 4 at Meltdown Comics, there's an event featuring Mark Evanier and his Kirby King of Comics book. So, go there, see him speak, sign, and entertain, and then you can literally walk to the Library for the panel.

New York Comic Con 2008 Wrap Up

Hey gang,Not to be melodramatic, but, I think NYCC might've been a big changing point in my career. Maybe it was being back in the East Coast, and having the realization that I've come a long way since leaving Boston, New York, and Pittsburgh behind seven years ago, or maybe it was just the infectiously good time Christina and I had, but, I feel like I'm turning to the next chapter of my career, my life, and my future.

The big difference between New York Comic Con and San Diego Comic Con is size. The more important difference is that San Diego is populated by people who understand that you walk to the right, whereas New York seemed to be populated by people who think they can breakdance in the aisle if they want to and you go fuck yourself if you're not cool with that. There was much pushing and shoving.

Despite that, the show was a lot of fun, and my nights of hanging out with old friends from back home and wandering around NYC brought back a lot of fond memories that I'm glad I can now insert my wonderful wife into.

And then my visit to Edwin Booth's Players Club, with a guided tour of everything from the bathrooms to Booth's bedroom was... amazing, to say the least.

Me being me, I took like eight pictures. Christina took another eight, and here's the best few.

Heading Out

Bright and (way too) early tomorrow morning, Christina and I are heading out for New York City, the New York Comic Con, and a weekend filled with seeing old friends, running from meeting to meeting, and generally wearing myself out. Thanks to the joys of Twitter, it's felt a little less isolated getting ready, as everybody heading to the show seemed to simultaneously hit 'Oh Fuck' Mode at the same time, and everybody's there cheering everyone else on. Or making mean jokes.

Mostly mean jokes.

At the Hollywood Public Library...

I got asked to host a panel at the Durant Branch of the Public Library about making comics.  It's literally two blocks from Meltdown, so, I hope some of y'all can join us.  It's convenient, on a Saturday, and should be lots of fun.

The Wedding

As you can see from the charming pictures of Christina and I with our officiant, Charles Phoenix (http://www.charlesphoenix.com) the wedding was a whole lot of fun. We had folks in from across the globe (Australia! Canada! Paris!) and from all around the country (Des Moines! Pittsburgh! DC!) and a good time was had by all.

I'm still debating about whether or not to put up more pictures from the day (I try and keep the personal life stuff as separate as possible from the blog stuff, after all) so let me know if you want to see more.

TheList for 10-17-07

Hey Gang, Just a quick word as the week of my nuptials bears down on me. We get married this weekend in Encino, and lots of friends and family are flying in, so I'm about to do a nice disappearing act for all of those not in the flesh for the next few days. Before I do, here's a quick look at what's going on.

First off, on the wedding kick, we made a comic book as a hand out for our guests, and got an amazing bunch of guys to contribute. Elk's Run's Noel Tuazon did an amazing job on the bulk of the pages, with a quick section of my Postcards collaborator Micah Farritor's work, and good friend Tony Fleecs put the thing together. Add to that it's wrapped in the above beautiful cover by Phil Hester. Keep checking the blog, as we're doing a giveaway of a few copies of this extremely limited comic. It's like if Elk's Run wasn't a miserable adventure in death and family.

Next up, over at Newsarama.com, John Siuntres's Word Balloon podcast has been posted, and it's the first of two parts of the Library Panel with myself, Mark Waid, Kazu Kibuishi, Christos Gage, Ross Richie, and Tony Fleecs. The panel was great, and relistening to it makes me feel pretty confident that it was a worthwhile endeavor for all involved. Special thanks to Dan Dupill from the LAPL for helping to set the whole thing up. Here's the full story.

Also, this week in stores, from IDW Gene Simmons House of Horrors #2 featuring a story by me drawn by the inimitable Andy Kuhn. I saw his original pages back at Comic Con, and they were absolutely amazing. Do yourself (and us) a favor and pick up a copy.

Finally, in somewhat bizarre news, a movie I wrote is actually on its way from Mark's and my pens (through some unknown Canadian rewrite guys) to the small screen. The movie's gone from being called They're Among Us to The Hatching (which I mistook for The Hutching, assuming it had something to do with vertical storage) and seems to possibly have at least something to do with what Mark and I originally wrote so many months ago. Best of all, it stars Isabella Rossellini and Judd Nelson. (I hope there's a walking away/fist pump/freeze frame at the end, but I doubt I'm that lucky.) God knows how the thing'll turn out, but, at the very least, I'm proud to cause each of you pain on a Saturday night in the near future. Here's the PR on the movie.

Birthday Updates!

Birthday Updates from Fialkov -- PUNKS the COMIC Summer Special #1 Featuring 48 pages of Abe, Fist, Skull, and Dog fighting aliens (occassionally) and punching things in the balls (mostly) will be unleashed to finer comic stores everywhere on Wednesday, August 29th.  Been described by Warren Ellis as "One of the best singles of the year."  We've sent out PDF previews to several media outlets, but if you were somehow missed and would like to review/interview/fawn/despise us/it e-mail me back and we'll get you the PDF.

We're still working on organizing festivities to celebrate the book's release, but, we do know for sure that the first one will be at House of Secrets Comics in Burbank from 5 to 7 when I myself will dance the dance of "Thank the sweet lord Zekapraka the book finally came out."  It's... embarassing to say the least.  The dancing that is.  House of Secrets and more info about them can be found here: http://www.artoffiction.com/.

PUNKS was also featured in the first new issue of TRIPWIRE magazine with an exclusive three page never before paid for three page story (it's actually a reprint of the Free Comic Book Day story.)  The magazine is actually a great time, so, go and check it out at your finer comic and magazine retailers.

-- The FUTURE of GRAPHIC LITERATURE is a panel held at the Los Angeles Public Library's Central Library in Downtown L.A. at the end of September.  Scheduled to appear along with me, are Mark Waid (of well... y'know... everything), Ross RIchie (of Boom Studios), Christos Gage (of Marvel/Wildstorm fame), Kazu Kibuishi (of Flight), and Tony Fleecs (of In My Lifetime and a couple of cool unannounced projects),   It'll be a long form discussion of the future of comics by a bunch of people who not only work in it, but work in radically different aspects of the business.   We're still finalizing details, but it looks like there'll be a little 'mini-con' afterwards wherein we'll all sign and sell books.  A good time for all.
