Half a Person - Available on Kindle

Hey gang, Just a quickie. I was playing around with Amazon's digital text platform service, and found it so easy to use, I figured I might as well put up some fiction on the Kindle store. I'm a HUGE fan of the Kindle, and mine has been glued to my hand since I bought it a few months ago.

A newly edited version of Half a Person, with a swank new cover is available for $1. This is a short story that ran on the blog way back when, but it's changed substantially since then. It's about a man who wakes up with a strange illness that slowly drives him and his wife insane. It's been called very 'Richard Matheson-y,' which is about the highest praise I could hope for.

You can check it out here via the link above.

If the reaction is good, (hell, even if it isn't) I'm going to try to do a couple of short stories a month on the site, hopefully building towards some kind of print collection of all of them down the road.

More in the coming weeks as I race ever forward to Comic-Con.

For more information on formatting for Kindle, I'd recommend starting with John August's blog here: http://johnaugust.com/archives/2009/kindle-formatting-for-web-geeks While you're at it, you should definitely check out his story, the Variant. It's really excellent.

Fialkov Freedom Chili

ChiliIn honor of the Holiday, I made some of my from scratch turkey chili for a visit from my mother-in-law.   I make it thusly: Ingredients: 2 lbs of Turkey 2 onions 2 green peppers 1 red peppers 2 fresh tomatoes 1/2 clove of garlic 2 cans of diced jalapeno peppers 1 large can of tomato sauce 2 cans of diced tomatos 1 can of pinto beans (or pintoito if you can find them) Cayenne Pepper Chili Powder Salt 2 limes Beer, as desired.

--

Dice the onions and add to the ground turkey.  Brown the turkey and onions.  As they brown, continue to dice the rest of the vegetables and add as you go.  Green peppers, red peppers, and garlic should go in first. Next dice the canned chilis. As the meat is finishing browning, dice the fresh tomatoes and toss them in. This would be where you'd add the beer, if you chose to do so, just make sure you let it burn off a bit before the next step.

Add a few tablespoons of chili powder, a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and the can of tomato sauce. Stir all together. Add the can of diced tomatos and let simmer. this is the part where I tend to flavor to taste, using the salt and the chili powder. Cut the lime in half, and squeeze it. I like to toss in the rest of the lime into the pot. Let it simmer for a few minutes, and then add the beans.

Now, you can let it simmer for a couple more minutes and eat, or, you can let it really take it's time and simmer for a few hours. Make sure to scoop out the lime rinds before serving.

Essentially the key is to add as many fresh vegetables at the top of the recipe, and, make sure there's enough chili powder to give it some kick. Oh yeah, and you can add a bit of sausage to make it extra awesome.

Enjoy and have a happy 4th of July.

Outlaw Territory Hits Stores This Week!

Hey gang, This week sees the release of the massive Outlaw Territory western anthology from Image Comics. I was honored to be a part of this big ol' book put together by the mighty Michael Woods. You can find out more about the book at the blog located here: http://outlawterritoryanthology.blogspot.com/ I'm in some pretty damn respectable company, and I'm immensely proud of how my story (with amazing art by Christie Tseng) turned out.

In other news, Noel and I will have a huge announcement about our next book come Comic-Con next month, as well as hopefully some news about Elk's Run's next iteration. As always, feel free to follow me at my blog, on Facebook, or on Twitter for more up to date and less newsworthy bites. Addresses below.
